Apprenticeship success

Apprentices have the opportunity to undertake a variety of positions such as mechanical fitter, machinist, engine component inspector, welder and maintenance engineer. From the beginning of the course, apprentices are involved in real workshop activities. The course combines classroom learning with hands-on practical experience.

In their first year, apprentices learn basic hand skills such as tooling, drilling and reaming. While in the classroom, the theory covers machining techniques such as center lathe, milling machine and abrasive wheel and grinding techniques. They also cover in depth theory of the internal combustion engine, gas turbine, and oil, fuel and air systems. Apprentices work towards achieving an SVQ Level 2 Performing Engineering Operations and a National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering. The first year of the apprenticeship is completed at RWG with the EthosEnergy apprentices visiting the Light Turbines team regularly.

Years two, three and four combine on the job training and assessment within a gas turbine and repair overhaul facility. Apprentices work towards an SVQ Level 3 in Aeronautical or Mechanical Engineering.

After successfully completing their fourth year, apprentices are awarded a modern apprentice certificate. Dean recently attended an award ceremony, where he received his certificate.

Over the last five years, Light Turbines has had 10 successful apprentices complete this scheme, with six of these employees still with EthosEnergy.
